Inform Policy

iCivics advances policy at the state and national levels to make civic education a priority for the health and strength of our nation.

It’s essential that each new generation is equipped to engage in our democracy—for our civic strength, our economy, our national security, and so much more.

That’s why iCivics’ strategic vision goes beyond the classroom to make civic education a nationwide priority.

Americans across the political spectrum agree on the importance of civic education.

This means they want policymakers to make greater investments in civic education and educators to spend more time on civic education in the classroom.

Policy Win at the National Level: In large part due to the efforts of iCivics and the CivxNow coalition it leads, funding for K–12 civic education programs was tripled in the 2023 fiscal year—from $7.75 to $23 million.

Leading the Movement for Civic Education

CivxNow, led by iCivics, is a growing movement, now with 300+ coalition members working to make civic education a priority at the state and national levels.

To achieve this goal, CivxNow advocates for bipartisan federal and state legislation that supports implementation of policies that reimagine and deliver relevant, inclusive, and engaging K–12 civic learning, both in- and out-of-school.

“There is no more important work than deepening young people’s engagement in our nation….It is my great hope that our nation will commit to educating our youth about civics, and to helping young people understand their crucial role as informed, active citizens in our nation. To achieve this, I hope that private citizens, counties, states, and the federal government will work together to [fund] nationwide civics education.”
